I was just reminded of this fact last week. Our family spent this past weekend in the Seattle area, and we left to make the drive over late in the afternoon on Thursday. Not only did it get dark shortly after we left, but we experienced fog over a great deal of the trip. And as the fog thickened, something happened. You guessed it! The term "fog line" began to take on a much more significant meaning for me. Because, while we don't often think about it, when it's actually foggy, that fog line becomes very helpful. It gives a constant, visual frame of reference when normal visibility has decreased. And so last Thursday night, I was poignantly reminded of the MEANING of the term "fog line", and frankly, I was grateful for it.
Many descriptive names for God are used throughout the Bible. And while the names are always absolutely true, it's possible that there are seasons in your life when certain names take on a deeper meaning and significance. When your circumstances are safe and secure, maybe God as Refuge or Shelter (Isaiah 25:4) doesn't resonate quite as personally. But during other seasons of life, (maybe you're even experiencing one right now!), God being a Refuge becomes far more than just a title...it takes on deep significance. And I think this tended to be the case for biblical writers as well. They weren't naming God as Rock (Deuteronomy 32:4) or Provider (Genesis 22:14) or Physician (Matthew 9:12) Shepherd (Psalm 23:1) or Father (Matthew 7:11) simply to relay some intellectual facts. They were responding to God's activity during specific circumstances; those titles were deeply significant!
What names or titles for God are most meaningful to you right now? How is God most powerfully evidencing Himself to you in this season of life? I think it's good to pay attention to how very needy you are of God, and what that means specifically to you right now. Maybe you even invent your own descriptive titles that have special meaning for you! Take special comfort in these names. Employ them in your prayer life and in your worship of God. Give Him specific credit for what He is doing in this season of your life!
