I really like this example of obedience. Now God has made all of us uniquely. You have a combination of skills, abilities, and personality that are distinctly yours. And in many regards, we are absolutely NOT expected to act exactly alike. God has given us a diversity of gifts on purpose, (1 Corinthians 12:12-31). Yet, while we can celebrate our diversity in the Body of Christ, we ought also to recognize that in some areas, God still expects us to follow His commands precisely! There are certain areas in which God has given us very clear instructions—instructions for holy living; instructions for marriage and family; instructions about behaviors to avoid; instructions for interactions between each other; etc. And just like the Israelites, we might be tempted to add our own twist to some of these instructions; to modify them. Because after all, I'm an individual, and I should express that, right? Well, I think the answer is sometimes "yes" but sometimes "NO"! Sometimes the correct answer is to follow God's commands to the letter without deviating to the left or to the right. Let's not be guilty of saying to God, "I am who I am, and so I'm going to tweak your commands a little bit here and there so they fit me better." Instead, we ought always to tweak our lives to fit God's commands!
